Enhancing Cancer Control in Peru: Innovations in Junín and Arequipa Regions

Context
To improve cancer control, we work with maternal and child health programs at the first and second levels of healthcare in Junín and Lambayeque to adopt cutting-edge tactics for detection, prevention, diagnosis, and early treatment. Our objective is to lower avoidable death rates among cancer patients and healthcare inefficiencies in budget implementation.
The Solution
This creative methodology of delivering policy, used in the Lambayeque and Junin health networks, makes it easier to visualize medical service gaps and allows for the more effective deployment of healthcare workers to meet patient demand. The Health Expenditure Execution Improvement solution helps regional health officials better translate their budgetary constraints into improved patient outcomes through an integrated program of analysis and development. This strategy represents a novel public management approach for optimizing healthcare delivery. It is bolstered by a dashboard that facilitates better information management and connectivity among regional healthcare administrators, as well as a digital solution designed to address specific patient experience needs within the health sector.
Outcome
The overarching aim of this initiative is to reduce maternal mortality caused by breast and cervical cancer among women aged 30 to 60 in Peru's Lambayeque and Junin regions, aligning with the National Cancer Law and its Regulations. Our efforts focus on enhancing coverage, timeliness, and quality of cancer promotion, prevention, and early diagnosis activities in coordination with the first level of healthcare in two comprehensive health networks. Additionally, we seek to improve the timeliness and quality of processes for definitive cancer diagnosis, staging, and both recuperative and palliative treatments. Furthermore, governance strengthening aims to garner political and financial support for sustaining and expanding innovative initiatives within the two macro-regions.
